She had been following him all night. It was around dusk when she first sensed him, and when she did, she actually felt reliefe. It meant her powers were behaving. So, she stalked him, keeping about a block's distance between them.

She waited until he had perched on a tall but flat rooftop then dropped down behind him with a whoosh.

"I wanna talk to you."

Midnighter smiled behind his mask, which looked oddly sinister, even though he was quite at ease with the young girl. He liked the kid. No, he wasn't the girl's dad. But he had taken a ... casual interest in her (which was more then what he did for his own team mates).

"Keeping tabs on me, eh?" Just like his own adopted daughter. The two were quite similar in many ways, actually. Except now his Jenny, his daughter, talked back and gave the orders. Not that he was too bothered by it. It was endearing. "Alright kiddo, what do you want to talk about." He asked, squatting down to take a seat on the roof.

"Hm" Midnighter regarded the subject with natural suspicion. "A particular boy?" He couldn't yet tell if this was more a conversation to be had with the likes of Power Girl, or if he, the stand-in creepy father figure was indeed the right choice. "Because talking about boys is too general. They're not all the same."

Theoretical. "Right." Midnighter answered dryly, though agreed to her terms. "But let's got for the easy one first. If you like someone, you'd know. You don't need me telling you. But you probably want to be around them, you think about them, and you hold onto stupid little details about the time you've already spent together." Midnighter shrugged a shoulder, "But if he likes you?" He repeated back the question. "Depends on the boy. Depends on if he's honest or not. Boys can lie and pretend just as much as girls if it means getting what they want." He did not yet address what that might be. "Some boys are shy, others outgoing ... so what kind are we talking about?" He prompted, wanting to narrow this down.

Midnighter nodded, understanding her completely. "Boy's like us ..." He began thoughtfully, "We're damaged, sometimes. In ways we don't know how to fix, or don't want to." That was an important distinction.

"Boy's like us" He repeated with a sigh, "don't keep many friends, and latch onto only a few people. So if you're a regular part of his life right now, he likes you ... but that's different from he likes, likes you. So what are we talking about here?"

The moment the question was asked, Midnighter brought a hand up to his face with a shake of his head. "Oh god" He laughed, "Oh darl'n." He laughed some more, then cleared his throat, "No. I have a husband. He was my partner in the field, before being my partner in private." He explained, feeling that kids were much more hardy and accepting about these sorts of things then adults were.

"But I trust him. When I'm angry, he lets me be angry. And when I'm ready to calm down, he's there too." There was more to it of course, but Midnighter eased off the subject to let her adapt to the answer and if she still wanted to have his advice on the subject.

"Well- like I said, we were partners first. We got to know each other; we functioned as a unit." This was all probably very revealing, but it was the sort of conversation Midnighter had not had before; so at least it wasn't boring. Very rarely did something new cross his path. It was good for him.

"But no matter what unfolded- no matter how things played out ... I always saw myself with him at the end of the day." Midnighter gave a slight huff, "But you don't want to hear about me ... how old is this theoretical guy of yours."

"Right." Midnighter fixed her with a look. The subject was not about to be dropped and he already had practice with raising young stubborn girls. "Old enough to be me? Old enough to drive, but not to drink? Old enough to know better? Give me a range here kiddo."

"Uh-huh. So if it doesn't matter- then there's no reason not to tell me." Midnighter prompted, sitting forward, he pulled off his mask and held in his hands. His features were rough and sweaty, but he showed his real face to her to show that he cared about her and was giving her the chance to read him without the mask. "Sometimes, when we get too close, when there's attachment ... emotions ... these are not good things. They make us forget to protect ourselves."

"So tell me about him." He said, remaining calm and willing to listen. After all, around the same age, Jenny had been well on her way to drinking and smoking and other things Midnighter didn't want to think too hard on.

Without the mask and wig, it was clear just how young she really was. But he had seen her in action, she was good and had no qualms about her age; just the other guy. The idea of Haze being involved with someone in college made Midnighter uncomfortable of course. While she might have a crush on someone older, as kids did, the reverse was creepy and not good in his book. "It's both. I married him, knowing that if I have a weakness, it's him." He said simply. "My concern for you is ... you're willing to take that risk, because you like him ... but he won't do the same for you. Do you understand what I'm saying?"

"Yes. I would risk for you ... that's why we're talking, aren't we?" He attempted to smile, being genuine in his harden way. "But I don't know this kid ... so naturally, I want you to be safe until you are certain you can trust him."

"My husband." Midnighter shifted the focus of the conversation to give her a break, "Apollo. Draws power from the sun ... and as near as we can tell, will never age or die. Me on the other hand ... I've died several times already ... but I think I look pretty good for it." He smirked.

"And one day, I'm going to be too old for the job ... or I'll stay dead. But until then, I can count on him being my partner and apart of my life." Midnighter felt it was a good standard to offer her. Relationships weren't easy, regardless if the partnership was only work related or something more (not that it was allowed to be something more in her case!); but this kid had to hold up his end, he had to be worthy of her loyalty, let alone affection.

Midnighter nodded. "There's nothing wrong in that. He sounds like a good friend to you."

"It's a nice feeling, being able to be yourself." Especially for cookies like them, darker and more rough around the edges. "I understand the appeal to that ... he's giving you something you crave, a life, a style of living you want for yourself ... and that's a good thing. You should be comfortable with who you are and not made to conform to some other notion of what is acceptable and what isn't."

"So I get it. I get what you get out of it ... but what does he get out of it? If it's one sided, it won't last." He warned.

"I wasn't going to." Midnighter said with a slight shrug, though kept his eyes fixed on her, having never seen her eyes go purple before.

"But it sounds ... alright." It was the closest Midnighter was going to get to saying he was ok with it; at least until he met or saw the kid in action for himself.

Midnighter laughed, but it was genuine and non-mocking. "No- no. Let's just stick with the two of us, alright? I'm not much of a team player, so- no promises. But I wouldn't mind a change from my routine."

He didn't do anything as fatherly as pat her on the back or attempt a hug, but he did smile at her. "I'm glad you decided to talk to me ... even if you didn't get the answers you were hoping for."

"There's only one thing I'm really good at, and talking is rarely apart of it. Even so- we're not like the Capes ... you can count on me for that. I'm not your dad" He said, breaching the subject that originally drew them together, "But even if I saw, I'd let you do as you saw fit for your own life. Just make sure you're hurting the people who are meant to be hurt ..." And not the people who cared about her. "Some of these Capes are sensitive little flowers."

Midnighter nodded with approval, shaking her hand on equal terms. "I'll be keeping an eye on you too, Mindy" He said with a wink. "And-" He stood, for once awkward about not having a normal, civilian name to give her "my name doesn't change. It's the one I came with." He explained, not wanting her to feel snubbed out of the revealing information.
